Sweating to Make a Difference

Sam B. Cook Healthplex uses group fitness to help children in need.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Capital Region Sam B. Cook Healthplex mixed fitness, fun and fundraising at the 6th Annual LES MILLS Relaunch, ‘Sweatin’ to Make a Difference’, to collect food and raise money for The Food Bank’s Buddy Pack Program.

Through monetary donations and a food drive at the Fitness Center, members, participants and staff raised $306, 866 pounds of food and 495 jars of peanut butter, which largely exceeded their goal!

“The sense of community and genuine desire to help people always inspires me and I see it consistently in our members and our group fitness participants,” says Sarah Harbour, Group Fitness supervisor at the Sam B. Cook Healthplex. “This event gives me a great sense of pride year after year and it’s a win-win all around. We have folks coming together in the name of their health to help positively impact the lives of others, you can’t beat it!”

Group fitness participants joined the Sam B. Cook Healthplex to support The Food Bank and experience the latest LES MILLS releases. On Saturday, July 28 group fitness instructors lead participants through LES MILLS BODYSTEP ™, BODYPUMP ™ and BODYFLOW ™. On Sunday, July 29 the launch kicked off the new releases of LES MILLS GRITTM PLYO, BODYATTACKTM, CXWORXTM.

When you share food with those who are struggling, you bring hope for a brighter tomorrow. Whether you are donating a dollar or dropping off excess produce from your garden, every gift makes a difference. The Food Bank relies heavily on donors and volunteers to operate efficiently. About The Food Bank’s Buddy Pack Program

One in five children in our service area faces hunger on a regular basis, with more than half qualifying for free or reduced-price meals at school. For many of them, breakfast and lunch at school offer the only source of reliable nutrition, and they are at risk of hunger over the weekend. To alleviate the risk, The Food Bank partners with elementary schools to provide Buddy Packs to school children. Buddy Packs are backpacks filled with kid-friendly, nutritious food that students take home over the weekend or holiday periods to supplement their meals when there is not enough for them to eat at home. The Food Bank distributes 7,500 Buddy Packs each week during the school year at 150 schools in the 32-county service area.
