Goldschmidt Cancer Center Installs New Linear Accelerator

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – The Goldschmidt Cancer Center of Capital Region Medical Center is excited to announce the installment of a new TrueBeam® Linear Accelerator (LINAC) from Varian Medical Systems, which for delivers radiotherapy treatments to the tumors of cancer patients.

The TrueBeam ® system is a powerful, precise and versatile treatment machine that can be used to deliver advanced forms of radiotherapy, including accurate stereotactic approaches for treating very small lesions quickly and accurately. Doctors can use it to deliver many types of radiotherapy, including intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and RapidArc® radiotherapy. For lung and other tumors in the thorax and abdomen, TrueBeam® offers respiratory gating, which allows clinicians to compensate for tumor motion that occurs as patients breathe.

At the core of the TrueBeam® system is Varian's high-powered medical linear accelerator, a machine that rotates around the patient to deliver radiotherapy treatments from virtually any angle. The system can concentrate radiation doses on the tumor while minimizing exposure of surrounding healthy tissue.

Targeting Tumors Accurately

TrueBeam® also incorporates an X-ray imager that can generate 2-D, 3-D and moving images of the tumor and surrounding anatomy. For accurate tumor targeting, the patient’s position is adjusted based on these real-time images prior to treatment. A beam-shaping device continually shapes and reshapes the radiation beam to match the three-dimensional shape of the tumor as the machine rotates around the patient during treatment.

Fast, Precise Treatment

The TrueBeam ® system can be used for RapidArc® and Gated Rapid Arc® radiotherapy treatments. RapidArc® delivers quick, precise image-guided treatments during a continuous rotation around the patient, with many treatments given in two minutes or less. Gated RapidArc® compensates for tumor motion due to respiration during a RapidArc® treatment.

Stereotactic Approaches to Treatment

The TrueBeam® linear accelerator is capable of stereotactic applications that involve delivering high doses of radiation to small areas over short periods of time. Because improved diagnostic tools make it possible to see tumors when they are still minimal in size, stereotactic radiotherapies are likely to continue to play a larger role in cancer care

Safe Treatment

Varian's linear accelerator has many advanced safety features and checks, ensuring that the LINAC will never deliver a higher dosage than prescribed by the radiation oncologist. These checks are both internal to the machine's system and external in the therapists and oncologists that operate them, ensuring the lowest risk and highest quality to patients.
